In 1982 the Graham and Mary Ford and their children relocated from Warriewood Beach, Sydney to South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula and purchased a license to catch wild abalone from the waters of South Australia’s West Coast. Coupled with their fishing interests the family set about establishing a vineyard on the shores of Boston Bay following the advice of a friend and the early predictions of the French explorers Nicholas Baudin and Citizen Freycinet who suggested that Boston Bay would be a good place to grow grapes naming it “Port du Champagny” and Boston Island “Isle de la Grange”. Photo taken by the Port Lincoln Times With the vineyard now in its 21st year the family is celebrating. The dream is reality! “Imagine … relaxing with a glass of your own wine, perusing the family vineyard, gazing at the sparkling waters of Boston Bay, watching the grain cargo ships coming in to fill their hulls at the huge silos, observing the small boats working the mussel and tuna farms, admiring the prawn boats coming and going, watching the sailing races and encountering whales and dolphins at play, the seagulls from the label seeming to fly off into the sky.” Constantly brushed by the moist, cool air of the Great Southern Ocean, this isolated wine outpost now grows premium riesling, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz grapes of profound quality, producing wine as vital, fresh and clean as the sea which laps at the vineyard’s edge. Good soil, a gentle climate, the meticulous attention of expert winemakers: add a unique location and the result is truly special wine. Read less
