Borsao Garnacha Monte Oton 2011

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

Another 100% Garnacha cuvee, the 2011 Monte Oton comes from hillside vineyards planted at an elevation of 1,200 feet on the southern side of the Moncayo mountain range. No oak is used in this totally naked red. It emphasizes minerality and fruit, as evidenced by its crushed chalk-like notes intermixed with sweet kirsch, lavender and licorice. This fresh, medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, hedonistic as well as intellectually challenging wine should drink well for 2–3 years.

Although the history of the city of Borja takes us back to the beginnings of the Paleolithic period, it wasn’t until the 4th century before Christ, in the heart of the Celtiberian period, when thanks to classical and numismatic written sources the name of this village came to light: Bursao. With the passing through Bursao of different civilizations like the Romans, Visigothic Hispania and the Muslims we have inherited architectural remains and above all, the natural inclination of its people towards agriculture and more particularly viniculture. Of equal importance was the implementation of artisanal techniques that today endure as living proof of the cultural richness of the former Bursao today known as Borja. During the I and II centuries, before our time, it used to mint bronze coins, ases and dividers as a symbol of its autonomy. On the obverse of the as we can see a celtiberian rider armed with a lance, riding on the writing of the name of the city in the native alphabet. The emblem adopted by the winery as a sign of identity. Read less

This polished red is both fresh and intense, with focused black cherry, boysenberry, licorice and ginger flavors backed by smooth tannins and well-integrated acidity. Drink now through 2016.

This value Garnacha is a fruity number with a no-nonsense berry character and clarity throughout. Cherry and plum aromas are vibrant, while flavors of black plum, boysenberry and medicinality are more than fine. Pepper, spice and overall warmth carry the finish.
