Bonterra Zinfandel Mendocino County 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

From organic grapes. A little Petite Sirah for added complexity. This Zinfandel offers aromas of blueberry, black stone fruit and black pepper. Polished tannins and flavors of berries, vanilla, black pepper and toasty oak lead to an elegant, balanced and rich long finish. Alcohol 14.9%. Not yet reviewed; 2015 vintage rated 91 points and 'Editors' Choice' by Wine Enthusiast: Beautiful black-cherry aromas and flavors make this wine direct and focused. A slightly gripping texture of fine-grained tannins and good acidity keeps the mouthfeel lively. It has a wonderful sense of purity and focus. Alcohol 14.8%.

Very green but not underripe. you can almost taste the "organic-ness" of the grapes as there is absolutely no chemical taste to this. Although it says that it contains Sulfites, I would swear this was a barrell tasting with no sulfites.

Peppery with sweet notes and a tingling subtleness on the nose. I was totally expecting that bite of spice but instead the initial sip is not really much of anything. I was a little disappointed. I gave it a little moment. Unlike other things in my life where I am very judgmental, I like to give wines a second chance. My second sip had a mild surprise of earthy blackcurrant undertones with a spicy dark chocolate and definitely more of what I was expecting given the bouquet. The nice surprise of this wine is the many layers it seems to have from chocolate to vanilla to dark fruits and spiciness. This Cab finishes with a sharp dryness that sucks your cheeks in a little. In fact, on more tastes I really got into the dryness of this wine and I really liked it.

Aromas of plum, red fruit, vanilla, and a hint of bell pepper on the nose. Smooth and silky mouth feel. This is a young Mendocino County big red. Hotness and astringency (especially on the aftertaste) may decline if it's allowed to age more (this seemed to happen with older vintages (2005 and 2006).

NOTES FROM WINEMAKER JEFF CICHOCKI: Cabernet Sauvignon is known for creating wines of amazing density and complexity with both concentrated and nuanced flavors. In making Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon, I like to add to these layers of flavor by blending in small amounts of other red varietals to add color, texture, and a bit of spice. Varieties and vineyard lots are kept separate until the best lots are blended together to create the final wine. This Cabernet offers aromas of bright cherry, currant, and raspberry with notes of toasted oak and vanilla. In the glass, you will find flavors of cherry and currant and a lingering and thoughtful finish. Good structure, a moderate weight, polished tannins and a balanced acidity promise an ever more pleasing wine to come.
