What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Winemakers Notes

“This complex and elegant wine is certified organic. The bouquet has dimension, with cherry, leather, chalk, meat and cigar-box notes. Lightweight on the palate, it is nicely textured and delivers lots of fruit flavor. Firm acids support the fruit and a cocoa-spice finish wraps it up neatly.”-Winemaker’s Notes

Wine Tasting NotesAromas of intense cola spice, blackberry pie (or is that blueberry?) alongside sweet vanilla oak and rich, creamy chocolate. The tannins are velvety smooth, even plush, and layers of flavors highlighted by rich berry, hearty blackberry and chocolate stand with vanilla oak spice. The oak is wonderfully integrated.

Delicious berry captivated by cedar-smokey oak. Leather and herbs create a ton of character follow by smooth tannins. At first smell, you feel as if you are walking into a warm cozy cabin in the woods. Delicious!

For fans of Bonterra, a Mendocino-based winery that exemplifies what’s possible with organically grown fruit and biodynamic viticulture, this is a good-news wine. The label has produced a string of very good vintages for its white wines, ranging from the expected (Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc) to the unexpected (varietal Roussanne and Marsanne). The reds also have done consistently well, but I have been waiting for a Syrah, a variety that should shine in Mendocino’s higher-elevation, rocky-top vineyards. I did recommend the 2004 as one of the better $15 Syrahs coming out of California, read more...
