Nice to see more specificity on wine labels (52% Lake, 48% Mendocino 2006), particularly when it’s not required but offered as a way for consumers to grasp what’s in the bottle before they commit to it. In this case, Bonterra is letting us know that when it finally got around to making Sauvignon Blanc, it didn’t care about appellation glamour as much as good fruit, organically grown. Another nice touch was picking the grapes to pull in both ripe melony flavors and crisper grassy flavors in the same wine. The result is a super Sauvignon Blanc that can bring loads of flavor without oak or high alcohol. The aromas are sweet and citrusy, with strawflowers and savory notes. The wine’s just as balanced in your mouth, as the tangier flavors dance with the more lush tropical fruits. Perhaps best of all, this is a cleansing, food-loving wine that doesn’t sell itself out with unnecessary sweetness. And it’s only $13!
