Bonterra Vineyards Merlot Organic 2006
A premier example of organic viticulture. Rich full plum nose, red cherry laced with chocolate, drinkable now with slight jammy notes. Medium to full spicy tannins with a touch of wood. The organically grown Bonterra Merlot is a medium bodied red that is ripe and supple on the palate.
We've been farming organically since 1987. Because it's our belief that organic grapes make better wine.

Rating: 85/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. Mix a touch of herbs with a bare bones scent of cherries and you will get the aroma of this somewhat underfilled effort. To its credit, it is clean and slightly firm in balance, but, while it has solid underlying structure, it could use some additional meat on its frame.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.
A tale of two cities: plush blackberry and plum flavors co-exist with herbal ones, and the wine is less than fully ripe ion the mouth. The grapes struggled to achieve ripeness, and there's a sharp streak of tart acidity. That said, it's the best wine that could have been made from this fine vineyard.
Juicy and chewy, with black cherry, violet, plum and black currant tones, nicely framed by modest tannin, eucalyptus and toasty oak character. Drink now through 2006.
Ripe tannins with rich cherry-berry and currant flavors are highlighted by a gentle top note of sweet oak-spice from barrel aging that carries through the velvety finish.

Wine Tasting NotesIn this vintage youll find aromas of blackberry pie followed quickly by pleasant toasty aromas of coffee and a slight nuttiness. A hint of violets lays over it all (if you can remove the image of rich vanilla ice cream for that blackberry pie). As you taste you find a wine full of finesse and silky, soft tannins, well balanced with concentrated and complex flavors of red and black cherry fruit. Rich and full of promise, this is a wine that clearly demonstrates why we are Passionately Organic.
Bonterra means "good earth," a fitting name for Fetzer's organically farmed property. The lack of chemicals used in growing the grapes and in producing the wine allows the round, dark berry notes of Merlot to shine.
