Bonterra Mendocino County Merlot Wine 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

2009 Bonterra Mendocino Co Merlot (Organic) 13.5% $15 Herbal and a bit leathery on the nose with soft violet, herb and dried grass accents to the attractively spicy wild berry fruit. This is soft and broad in the mouth with nicely fresh fruit flavors recalling red cherry and red currant in the mouth along with light, fresh herbal accents. The tannins are ripe and well integrated with enough acidity to add some sparkle to the midpalate. This finishes quite strongly with cherry pit fruit and a nice stony note that drives the vanilla laced wood spice through the finale. Eminently drinkable and highly recommended. 88pts Traits Acid: Medium Tannins: Soft Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium low Spicy Flavors: Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruit flavors: Medium plus Intensity of Flavor: Medium Weight in Mouth: Medium low

Funky vegetal anise aroma. Nicely balanced black fruit in the body, with a little green pepper on the finish

Fricken golden wine. Goes good with food from tilted kilt (palm springs)

Juicy and chewy, with black cherry, violet, plum and black currant tones, nicely framed by modest tannin, eucalyptus and toasty oak character. Drink now through 2006.

This meaty Merlot contrasts cool scents of a Mendocino redwood grove with super-ripe cherry fruit and tarry tannins; it's smooth and sharp at once. A four-square red for moussaka.

Bonterra means "good earth," a fitting name for Fetzer's organically farmed property. The lack of chemicals used in growing the grapes and in producing the wine allows the round, dark berry notes of Merlot to shine.

A tale of two cities: plush blackberry and plum flavors co-exist with herbal ones, and the wine is less than fully ripe ion the mouth. The grapes struggled to achieve ripeness, and there's a sharp streak of tart acidity. That said, it's the best wine that could have been made from this fine vineyard.

Last year's release was the best Bonterra Merlot ever. This one's right up there. It's rich and dry and exceedingly fruity, with long, deep cherry, blackberry and cocoa flavors complexed with coffee and herb nuances. The mouthfeel is vibrant and interesting.

Ripe tannins with rich cherry-berry and currant flavors are highlighted by a gentle top note of sweet oak-spice from barrel aging that carries through the velvety finish.
