Bonny Doon Vineyard White Rhone Blend California le Cigare Blanc 2006
Le Cigare Blanc is the white analogue of Le Cigare Volant, our homage to the complex blended wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This seasonal outing is based 60% on the Roussanne variety. This mysteriously subtle grape combines stone and mineral notes with a package surprisingly full of ripe orchard fruit. This seasonal outing is based (75%) on the grenache blanc variety, which contributes fresh notes of tarragon, lemongrass and spiced melon. Roussanne, a mere 25% of the cuvée, adds significant weight and a complexity of quince intermingled with Asian pear. The grenache blanc streamlines the 2006 Le Cigare Blanc experience - the wine is svelte, nuanced and somehow faster than usual. Initially it speeds across the palate in a racy burst, before slowing a bit, exhibiting more complexity on the mid-palate as more and more layers are revealed leading to a dazzling peacock’s tail of a finish. Through read more...a process of careful discernment, we have discovered that Cigare Blanc pairs wonderfully well with young, mild sheep and goat’s milk cheese as well as funky washed rind cheese such as young Italian Taleggio or an aged California Red Hawk.
Editorial Reviews for Bonny Doon Vineyard White Rhone Blend California le Cigare Blanc
Love this nose, it's got spice tones, a hint of almond milk and a dusty mineral tone over rich asian pear and quince fruit. There is a touch of sugar here but the acid keeps this lively and fresh. Delivers a burst of honied fruit right up front with a nice pear tone and some backing apricot notes. There is a nice mineral note that drives through the backend which has a nice subtle pineapple quality and leads to a rather long finish that has more honied tones but also very refreshing orange blossom notes and a lovely green herbal edge then a pineapple finale. 90pts
Lovely pears on the nose. Light bodied, tart, with a bit of oak baked in, some apples and herbs and a bit of spice. Rough acidity and a bit of bitterness in the mouth and especially on the finish make this quite an interesting wine.
Not much of a white drinker but this one really impressed me. Slightly more mineral and earthly than I'm used to, and the finish has some great spice. Very impressed.
Well rounded smooth body, with citric notes and assertive tartness. Lots of fruits, with peaches, lemons, avocado, and basil. The nose is sumptuous.
75% Grenache, 25% Rousanne Blanc Lightly oaked. There's some eucalyptus character, an some light spice. A lot of crispness to it, yet there's still a pleasant oiliness on the finish, which has a slight mint characteristic.
Smells.... like wine! Not blown away but it tastes fine, so I really like it!
