Food Pairings for Bonny Doon Vineyard Red Rhone Blend California le Cigare Volant
Twist and pour at 72 deg F. Deep dark red color. Nose with hints of barnyard, earthy dried fruit, and sour red fruit aromas. In the mouth tasty sour almost bright and almost layered fruit (plum, sour red berries) wrapped in an firm envelope of some tannin and bitter earthy notes. A bit on the watery side mid-palate but balanced and reasonably well-integrated. Not too much spice evident, not too complex at the twist-and-pour point. Finishes slowly but a bit warm. Dry. Body medium, acid medium or slightly higher, tannin medium or slightly higher. 44% syrah, 44% grenache, 12% cinsault, dash of mourvedre and carignane. Note: after 12 hrs at 50 deg F showed very rich neither sweet nor sour fruit that dominated the wine ... tasty in a Aussie heavy-fruited manner.
This 2006 Cigare Volant is a blend of syrah, grenache, mourvèdre and carignane - it makes for a bright and wonderfully gamey wine which would be very suitable as an accompaniment to roasted or grilled meat. It has toasty notes of cherry, birch and pomegranate, and this 2006 Cigare certainly shows the family flavour profile of red fruits, herbal and earthy notes in a savoury medium bodied package. The wine exhibits peppery, earthy, black currant and black cherry fruit, and this spicy, hedonistic vin de plaisir should be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years. Purchasers should treat it like a French Cotes du Rhone.
