Bonny Doon has always been one of my favorite producers — everything organically grown; eccentric winemaker; complex and friendly wines. The Contra field blend is lighter than I’d expected but with fresh blueberry and plum flavors dominating red berry underlying and subtle smoke and bacon notes. A fierce match for Mexican or other savory and spicy dishes. Also pick one up for that friend of yours who thinks he doesn't like red wines — the softness of this wine is sure to win over even the pickiest of drinkers!
Contradiction in ideals, contrary notions to common CA winemaking are Randall Grahm's monikers. From Carignan, grown in Contra Costa County, contrapuntally placed with a bit of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah in the mix, aromas of cherries and licorice, flavorful cassis, blackberries comingle supported by carignan's rustic backbone. Pair with grilled, roasted meats, but pleasuarbly soft enough to drink on its own.
