What to Expect

Champagne is specifically a sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France; every other sparkling is simply that, sparkling wine. Made to be aged for a few to many years, in many languages "Champagne" is synonymous with "party". When young, Champagne exhibits the fresh fruit tones of its "cepage", or blend. Usually based on a blend the features either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir as its main ingredient, Champagne's fruit can range from citrusy to orchard fruits and even red berries. The wine gains distinct yeasty notes from its secondary fermentation, the one that adds the fizz, which is typically described as recalling brioche or bread. As it ages Champagne tends to lose its obvious fruit, which is replaced by subtle nutty tones and subdued elements of dried fruits.

Winemakers Notes

A salmon-pink hue. Great character on the nose here, which shows notes of caramel, firm red and even black fruits, showing a little blackberry in particular. Full-bodied and powerful. Complex nose of honey, citrus and nuts on the palate as it unfolds.

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 129, November/December 2006 ($85; disgorged March, 2006) Copper-tinted pink. Rich buttery, smoky aromas of toasty red- and blackcurrant, cherry and mocha. Full and rich on the palate, with deep cherry and dark berry flavors joined by tobacco and bitter chocolate and all underscored by a note of toasty lees. This could do duty with lighter red meat dishes. Finishes chewy and powerful, with a solid, youthful structure and impressive length.

The 1999 is no exception and has been rightfully singeled out as by Wine Spectator as one of thier "Hot Wines...Very appealing for its potpourri of spices.
