Bolaire Bordeaux Superior 2009

Member Review by zufrieden:

This rich, deep, deep red wine exudes cigar, cranberry and a touch of cedar. Very smooth - even creamy - on entry with silky tannin that requires no further aging to soften. Finish is pleasant and medium with decent grip. Superb value for current drinking through 2015. Gobs of Petit Verdot in this baby; Oz fans take note. 90 points.

Château Bolaire, built in 1860, is located at the “end of the island" of Macau en Médoc. This land, nowadays connected to the peninsula “médulienne”, was in the past an island of the Garonne. Benefiting from conditions favourable with the vine growing (proximity of the river, natural drainage), this terroir has a distinctive wine history: 16th and the beginning of the 17th century represent the golden age of these vineyards. From this glorious period, the vineyard has evolved, but the tradition remains quite present: the grape variety Petit Verdot accounts for 39% of the planted grape varieties. Château Bolaire belongs to Vincent Mulliez today, also owner of Château Belle-Vue and Château de Gironville, in the Haut-Médoc appellation. Read less

This delivers blueberry, fig and blackberry fruit melded with ample toasted vanilla and mocha notes that fill out the finish. Rather obvious in the end, but will certainly have some fans. This is fabulous, with loads of ripe and concentrated berry, spicy fruit. Full and very rich. Velvety tannins. 40 percent Merlot, 35 percent Petit Verdot and 25 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. A sleeper of the vintage for sure, this dense, ripe, dark ruby/purple-colored wine, made from a whopping 39% Petit Verdot, 34% Merlot and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits some tobacco leaf, black currants, licorice, roasted coffee and forest floor.
