Bogle Vineyards Zinfandel Old Vines 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

For years, Bogle winemakers have sought outvines ranging in age from 60 to 80 years old forour Old Vine Zinfandel. These gnarly headtrainedand dry farmed pioneers produce lowyields of small, concentrated clusters of fruit, producing incredibly intense and flavorfulwines.Greeted with sun-ripened raspberries andfreshly ground white peppercorns on the nose, this Zinfandel is saturated with flavors of redberries and cranberries. Laced with a hint ofsavory herb in the background, the traditionaltones of juniper lead to a full and ripe finish, while 12 months of aging in two year oldbarrels wraps the wine in spicy oak and a touchof vanilla wafer. From the Winery Website.

Although the Bogle family has been farming since the mid-1800's, it was not until 1968 that the father and son team of Warren and Chris Bogle planted their first 20 acres of wine grapes in Clarksburg, California. In this small farming community nestled along the Sacramento River, the Bogle family's years of hard work have developed into an impressive grape growing operation, as well as a nationally acclaimed winery. Today Bogle Vineyards farms over 1,200 acres of wine grapes in the Delta region. While the winery was established ten years after the first grapes were planted, its success has grown tremendously along with the vineyards. The success of Bogle over the years is firmly rooted in one thing: the day-to-day involvement of the Bogle family in the hands-on effort to produce and promote quality wines. Patty Bogle became involved in the early years of the vineyards with her late husband Chris, when they planted fields together in the early 1970's. Patty took over operation of the winery in 1989 and has directed production to new and exciting heights. Patty's daughter Jody also contributes to the family business by being active in customer support, as well as running the wine club and handling all international sales. Patty's son Warren, named after the founder of Bogle Vineyards, is the sixth generation of the Bogle family to farm this fertile Delta region. Like his grandfather and father, Warren understands that in order to produce quality wines, you must first produce quality grapes. This tradition of respect for the land and the vines is crucial to the success of Bogle wines. The production of Bogle wine is influenced by this family tradition as well as the ever-changing trends in the wine industry. Since 1992, Bogle Winery has participated in the California Appellation Program. In this program, winemakers source fruit from some of the best vineyards in the state and blend them with Bogle's Estate Vineyards in Clarksburg, thus assuring that the wines benefit from many of the incredible grape growing regions of California. Each and every Bogle wine created is a unique and exciting blend with true varietal character and an approachable style. With their deep commitment to quality, the Bogle family wouldn't have it any other way. Read less

Smokey and weedy with a coffee/over-steeped tea quality on the nose. Easy drinking and attractively bright in the mouth with some black plum skin and candied raspberry flavors immersed in cocoa and mocha flavors on the palate. There’s a whisper of tannin here that adds some textural contrast to the bright mouthfeel. In the end though this feels a bit out of kilter and extracted in the mouth with black cherry flavors that are attractive if simple but that can’t really get past the tannins and extraction. 80pts

An unspecified blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah Noticeably oaky on the nose with some notes of smoky bacon and lots of cedary spice over lightly pepper berry fruit. Noticeably sweet on entry, though not terribly heavy due to the relatively high acids here. There’s a fairly strong mocha note early on the palate that is followed by jammy blackberry and black cherry fruit. tannins are modest. Smooth, soft and supple with just a hint of wood tannins helping to dry out the slightly sticky, sweet finish. 83pts

Very fruity on the nose with jammy blackberry and bramble aromas that reveal plenty of Zinfandel in the blend with some black plummy fruit and a bit of black, licorice spice all covered with rather smoky, toasty raw oak. Moderately big on entry with a slightly chewy mouthfeel and flavors that are bold in their intensity but rather matte on the palate with a cold coffee quality that envelops the palate along with dark plummy and bitter chocolate fruit. The finish is rather raw, with scratchy tannins and some toasted almond notes and more brewed coffee character. A bit soft in the mouth, and a touch sweet, this is big and boring. 80pts

Jammy on the nose and slightly peppery. Spice and dried woodsy notes accent the tarry, slightly dried plummy fruit, topped with toasted sawdust. Nicely balanced in the mouth and lighter bodied that the nose suggests. This is a bit angular and dry to the point of slight bitterness, but the fruit is bright if low in the mouth with a stewed red fruit quality. Really well balanced which makes this surprisingly easy to dink. Not complex with pleasant flavors, but the texture is what people must love. The finish is also fairly surprising, showing a simple oak red fruit quality with good length. 85pts

This is on the sweet side. Intense jammy and ripe cherry with vanilla and dark chocolate notes. This is complex on the nose and in the mouth. I have had the 2012 and 2013 and have not noticed a big difference. This is one I will always have on hand.

Family owned Bogle vineyards has an amazing reputation for producing wines that show outstanding value. So I guess it's no surprise that this luscious Red Blend is the #1 Best Buy red on the Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Best Buys (#3 overall) of 2014! An old vine blend of Zin, Cab, Petite Sirah and Syrah aged 18 months in French and American oak barrels. The Wine Enthusiast scored it 91 points and said "This dry red blend is as sophisticated, structured and balanced as many high-end Cabernets. Made from old-vine Zin, with Syrah, Cabernet and Petite Sirah as well, it has a deep, exotic aroma of dark fruit plus cedar and cardamom. The flavor is richly fruity, the mouthfeel is firmly textured and the finish lingers nicely. It’s medium bodied and full-flavored." BTW Just Wine Points scored it 98!
