Woody and slightly herbal on the nose with a very chocolaty overtone and spicy, almost prune fruit. Soft on entry and slightly creamy, but this maintains some nice freshness in the mouth. Good clarity to the slightly sweet plummy and dried fruit flavors. There’s a nice touch of wood on the mid-palate, adding some spice and enough acidity to add a touch of lift on the back end. Leads to a slightly astringent, clean black cherry finish with lots of tobacco and cedar accents. 85pts

They don't advertise it but Bogle is organic and they are considered expert growers. They are the best wine in the $10 price bracket and beat most I've had at the 12-15 mark. The wine guy at Trader Joe's introduced me to it. It often sells for $15-$25 at restaurants in the area. Real cork, and in 20 bottles I havn't had a single cork taint from TCA, which is pleasing. Their other varieties are also very good especially the Pinot Noir. Their notes from their website are correct: "Concentrated and full-bodied, the 2009 Merlot is a study in contrasts. Subtle and silky, yet bright and intense, this deep red wine is multifaceted. Black raspberry and dark cherry greet the nose, while the brighter fruit of ripe summer plum dazzles the palate. The toast and spice of twelve months in American oak seamlessly integrate with the tannin structure of this wine, leaving a long, lingering finish, which is ready to drink now through 2014."

A good friend shared the gift of his "house red" - Bogle Merlot. A surprisingly good wine for the price. Smooth and rich. Have not tried the other Bogle varieties.

From the winery, 'Developed and intense fruit from this harvest has produced one of our most full-bodied merlots yet! Deep cherry fruit hits both the nose and palate upon the first sip, followed by soft hints of summer anise. Touches of pipe tobacco and spicy oak lend weight to the finish, trailed by firm, assertive tannins.'

Plum, cherry and toasty oak tones are round and intense, with soft structure.

Ripe and round, with plenty of juicy blackberry and blueberry notes packed in to this full-bodied California red. Hints of mocha and cream lure you into taking another sip.

Except for a slightly rustic edge to the way the wine feels in the mouth, this is a spectacular success. It stands next to much more expensive Merlots proudly. Dry and smooth in tannins, the cherry, red currant and pepper flavors are outstanding.
