2011 was off the charts. 2012 is forgettable. When I first tasted the 2011 vintage with its superb blend of fruitiness and earthy mourvedre, it immediately became one of my favorites. What a difference a year makes. The 2012 version is sharp, aggressive and unpalatable.

The 2012 Wolftrap Red is a blend of 67% Syrah, 31% Mourvedre and 2% Viognier matured with oak staves. It has a simple but clean fresh bouquet with dark cherries and briery fruit. The palate is ripe and rounded on the entry with plump tannins and a svelte, commercially savvy finish. As usual, this is great value. Drink now–2015.

Good bright, dark red. Aromas of cherry liqueur, blueberry, wild herbs and tree bark. Juicy, spicy red fruit and menthol flavors are accented by cool herbal notes. Boasts good intensity but could use more flesh and pliancy; seems a bit pinched today. This fresh blend finishes with firm tannins and moderate persistence.

Soft and forward, with cherry compote, raspberry and lightly toasted vanilla notes. Easygoing finish. Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier. Drink now.

Winemaker's Notes:

"Sourced from Malmesbury in the Swartland the Syrah provides the spice and weight while the Mourvedre adds structure and aroma to the blend. The pungent Viognier component boosts the perfume profile. French oak matured with the Viognier blended prior to bottling. Intense red colour with a purple rim. A spicy profile with ripe black fruit and violets. Smooth and rich on the palate with soft tannins, good density and a hint of oak. A well balanced, unpretentious wine made for easy drinking." -Winery
