Boekenhoutskloof the Chocolate Block Red Blend 2015

External Review:

The 2012 Chocolate Block Franschhoek has slightly more Syrah and less Grenache than previous vintages. The blend of 70% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Grenache, 6% Cinsault and 1% Viognier is raised in 13% new wood, 87% in used barriques, hogsheads and 2,500-liter foudres. It has a rounded, quite sensual bouquet with pure, almost understated raspberry preserve, crushed strawberry and delicate touches of seaweed and fennel emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, quite feminine with fine tannins. This is very well-balanced and focused with superb freshness and vivacity toward the elegant finish. This is a very commercially savvy, top-class offering from Mark Kent and his team.

The farm of Boekenhoutskloof wasoriginally granted to Huguenot settlers in1776. For two hundred years it remained in the same family. Over the two centuries they engaged in agricultural activities as diverse as tobacco, fruit, cattle and ultimately wine production. The original owners ceased wine production in the 1940s. The existing partnership re-opened the winery for production in 1996. Lead by Cellarmaster Marc Kent (South African Winemaker of the Year, 2007), the Winery is now regarded as one of SA’s top producers. Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, with its premium range selling out on release each vintage. The Chocolate Block, a Syrah based blend, is probably the most successful new offering to come out of SA in the modern era. Boekenhoutskloof is acknowledged by Robert Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide and The 2009 Wine Report as South Africa’s # 1 producer. Read less

Toasted savory and anise notes lead the way, backed by soft plum and blackberry paste flavors. A toasty hint holds sway on the finish. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault and Viognier. Drink now.

Deep red-ruby. Nuanced, expressive nose offers scents of currant, blackberry, brown spices and dried flowers. The palate displays flavors similar to the aromas, with an attractive balance of sweetness and acidity. I would never have guessed that this spicy midweight contained so much Syrah. Finishes with dusty, slightly dry-edged tannns and good but not outstanding length.

An expressive nose with intense dark cherry spiced raspberry, black fruit and violet-infused perfume. With time another dimension of rusticity and fleshiness is revealed with underlying earthy notes. The palate is firmly structured, yet elegant, with supple tannins and spicy oak aromas covering a rounded mid-palate that reveals purity of fruit and a lifted freshness. Classically styled with integrated tannins and balanced acidity to ensure a long, succulent and textured finish.
