Write out of the bottle, this wine has a very interesting and somewhat bizarre front note. Allow it to open up a bit and it becomes more smooth. Not something I consider to be worth the $17 price tag. Maybe it is if you allow it to age.

While Boeger produces close to twenty varietals, they are most known for their Zinfandel, a specialty of the Sierra Foothills. Barbera, though, has a long history in the area, going as far back as the Gold Rush, when many immigrant families turned to wine production for income after the rush ended. Italians planted what they had back home and the area today is still thriving with Cal-Ital wines. This Barbera comes from one of the oldest plantings in the El Dorado AVA, the Boeger family’s Ritchie Vineyard. Here, thirty-five year old head trained vines grow on shallow rocky soil at an elevation of 1,500 feet.Bright ruby with a violet edge, the wine is moderately saturated and viscous with aromas of strawberry and raspberry jam, cherry cobbler, butter cookie, pancakes, burnt sugar, cedar, lily, mushroom, and Asian Five Spice. On the palate the wine is elegant, silky, and creamy with cherry, strawberry, and clove notes. It is balanced with all components well-integrated and has a long, flavorful finish. This American Barbera leans more towards the traditional Italian food-friendly versions than the more bombastic styles typically found here.
