Cranberry, licorice, smoke on the palate. Fleshy mouthfeel. Low intensity finish, but an altogether pleasant if uncomplicated rioja.

I purchased the 2009 Montebuena Rioja on the strength of Robert Parker's 90 point review and the ten dollar price tag. This is the first Tempranillo I've ever tried, so I can't say where this wine ranks based on the varietal, though I certainly thought it was a good value. Light purple and medium bodied with a bright berry aroma, this wine is crisp and approachable, though somewhat lacking in depth (again, this could be a characteristic of the varietal). The flavor has a strong under-ripened raspberry component - a bit tart for my taste - and a decent finish with just enough tannins to satisfy that red-wine craving. Not my favorite style perhaps, but I would definitely recommend this as a good red wine to drink on a hot summer day based on its bright, acidic flavor profile.

Bought a case and have enjoyed it. As Rioja this presents a tad on the lighter/sweeter side. It has a an interesting after note which is earthier. This is not a wine for the general wine drinker. It is one that a regular Rioja drinker will enjoy. Crisper than a Malbec, sharper and dryer than a Pinot or Syrah.

The 2009 Montebuena is 100% Tempranillo. Dark ruby-colored, it offers an appealing perfume of spice box, leather, tobacco, and blackberry. On the palate it is packed with ripe fruit, has outstanding concentration, and impeccable balance. It is a great bargain that offers a sneak preview of the great 2009 vintage in Rioja and northern Spain in general. It should drink well for 6ndash;8 years.

A relatively deep and extracted style of Tempranillo is the Labastida, showing bold, ripe flavors of black cherry and dark fruit as well as hints of Tempranillorsquo;s tell-tale cigar-box aromas. A great buy.

The great Spanish values just keep coming! This Rioja is another stellar example of the quality that wersquo;ve grown to expect, at an affordable price to boot. Aged in oak, this red possesses full flavors with light licorice and blackberry nuances. Despite the big flavors, there is a gentleness to this wine that makes it approachable and a good choice for those looking to explore beyond Grenache- or Shiraz-based wines.

A contender for best value in my Spanish tastings, this delicious Rioja is dark ruby in color, with aromas of earth, spice, and red fruits. It has surprising depth, ripe, smoky, cherry flavors, light tannin, and an excellent pure finish. This terrific bargain can be enjoyed over the next 2ndash;3 years.
