Bodegas Volver Volver la Mancha 2011

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Tasting Notes: This single vineyard-designated wine has plenty of red cherries, blueberries, mulberries and red raisins, depicting grapes pushed to full ripeness without going beyond the boundary into excessive overripeness. The oak character is relatively elegant with toasty, coffee hints only, and the balanced wine shows some lingering length as well. Drink now or in the next five or so years. Wine Description: The grapes for this wine come from a 72-acre vineyard called "Finca Los Juncares," which was planted in 1957. Only after very careful vineyard selections, the best vines of Tempranillo grapes are hand-harvested in small boxes to prevent bruising. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel, and the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months and then bottled unfiltered. About the Winery: Bodegas Volver is a project developed and co-owned by Jorge Ordoñez and Rafael Cañizares. This winery is located in the best terroir of La Mancha found in the eastern region of the DO. The soil is the reason the winery committed to purchasing 247 acres of vineyards with deep sandy soils, iron-rich clay, and a thick layer of chalk that are located at an altitude of 1,980 feet.

(100% tempranillo, from vines planted in 1957 at 660 meters altitude; aged in French oak, half of it new, for 17 months and bottled without filtration): Glass-staining ruby. Explosive, seductively perfumed aromas of candied red and dark berries, incense, rose pastille and Asian spices. Sappy, penetrating black raspberry and blueberry flavors show excellent depth and clarity, with smoky mineral and star anise nuances gaining strength with air. Closes sweet and very long, with lingering spiciness and gentle tannins. Importer Jorge Ordonez told me that lots of high-end oak is used here, from the likes of Taransaud, Darnajou and Dominique Laurent, for example. - Stephen Tanzer 91 PointsThis bold red delivers plenty of espresso, black pepper and toasty oak flavors that frame a core of rich plum, boysenberry and sassafras. Features well-integrated tannins and enough acidity for liveliness. Drink now through 2018. 5,000 cases imported. TM - Wine Spectator Magazine 90 PointsThe 2010 Volver (100% Tempranillo) is a single vineyard, outstanding effort that was aged in French oak for 14 months prior to being bottled unfiltered. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by copious aromas of black currants, black cherries, pepper, underbrush and licorice. This well-made, medium to full-bodied effort should drink well for 4-5 years. - Robert Parker 90 Points

Vintage: 2008 02/13/2013

Theres raw intensity in this modern red, which offers assertive blackberry, espresso and anise flavors in a dense texture, with firm, chewy tannins. Best from 2011 through 2017. 5,000 cases imported. -TM (100% tempranillo, aged for 14 months in new French oak) Bright purple. A complex bouquet displays scents of cherry, blackcurrant and tobacco, with a hint of smoked meat. On the serious side and slow to open, offering bitter cherry and herb flavors that gain sweetness with air. Chewy tannins add grip to a smoky finish; this needs some air or a bit more bottle age. Dark as night and thick, with heavy, modern aromas of shoe polish, bacon and ripe, roasted black fruits. The feel is concentrated and healthy, while the flavors run very ripe and dark, with plenty of oak thrown in. Finishes rich, with bacon, resin, black pepper and some burn. Seems more jacked up than its listed 14.5% alcohol. - M.S. ** SOLD OUT **

Vintage: 2007 05/17/2010

The 2007 Volver is sourced from a single 72 acre vineyard that was planted in 1967 with head pruned Tempranillo. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged for 14 months in new French oak. Purple-colored, it offers up an alluring aromatic array of pain grille, smoke, violets, black cherry, and blackberry that jumps from the glass. On the palate it is medium- to full-bodied with gobs of ripe fruit, succulent flavors, soft tannins, and excellent balance. This lengthy effort over-delivers big-time and is a superb value.
