Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Tempranillo Blend Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5° 2001
Deep red. Wonderfully perfumed, sharply delineated aromas of fresh red berries, cherry, rhubarb, roasted coffee and vanillin oak. Supple, lush and sweet, with medium to full body, a complex array of red and dark fruit flavors, exotic spice accents and fine-grained but firm, youthful tannins. Finishes sweet and long, the tannins providing shape and grip but not intruding on the sweet, elegant fruit and tangy spice notes. There will be no Unico from this vintage so this producer's best fruit is in this bottling.

Nose is smokey with a light minerals but overall quite closed. Watery in the mouth with cherry and thin earth. Really can't say this is representative. Out of all the wines served at the Salon de los Mejores, we were given a small if non exsistent sample of this wine, and then ignored. Really a disappointment and I hope to try this one day in a proper setting. 2.5/5 [NR]
My ancestors are Spaniards, so when I saw this renowned wine from Ribera del Duoro, I had to purchase it for tasting. I was disappointed. It was nothing to jump up and down about. I wish I would have spent the $100+ price on a $30 more enjoyable Temparnillo or something more enjoyable. The color was Dark Purple, the nose of rose petals, the taste was Floral violets, chalky, slightly acidic, leathery. The finish coated my mouth but on a scale if 10 I would only give this wine a 6. Compare that rating with the high price (which I have paid for other wines) this 1o year old Valbuena was disappointing.

The wine that normally goes into Unico went into this bottling in 2001 as Unico was not produced. Sweet vanilla and toasted notes open up to flavors of orange peel, black cherry, and a rich smokiness. A great introduction to the world-renowned Vega Sicilia estate.
