Bodegas Valsacro Rioja 2004

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

The 2001 Rioja, made from 70-year old Grenache, 28-year old Tempranillo, and 25-year old Mazuelo, is a serious, structured, backward effort displaying notes of lead pencil shavings, black cherries, cedar, and licorice. It is a medium-bodied, attractive, elegant Rioja with moderately high tannin, excellent depth, and fine purity as well as personality. Still tightly knit, it will benefit from another year or two of bottle age, and should last for a decade.

The 2004 Crianza is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Mazuelo. Dark crimson in color, the nose reveals lots of spice, mineral, black raspberry, and black cherry. On the palate this Rioja is layered and rich with enough silky tannin to evolve for several years. Spicy, satisfying, and lengthy, this is a wine to enjoy now and over the next 8ndash;10 years.

The purple-colored 2004 Crianza is a blend of 50% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, and 10% Mazuelo. It has an excellent perfume of mineral, scorched earth, violets, black cherry leading to a layered, ripe, medium to full-bodied wine. On the palate spicy black fruit and mineral notes emerge leading to a medium long, fruit-filled finish. It will evolve for 2ndash;3 years and provide optimum drinking from 2012 to 2024.

The Valsacro Riojas are first-class efforts. The 2001 Crianza, from an outstanding vintage, is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Mazuelo aged for 12 months in French and American oak. Made in a modern style, the wine is dark ruby in color with attractive aromas of cedar, black cherry, and licorice. It is medium-bodied, structured, and in need of time to blossom but the depth and purity of fruit suggest that patience will be rewarded.

Alluring aromas of blackberry and spice give way to blackberry, cola, toast and mineral flavors, on a plush texture, with well-integrated tannins and succulent acidity. A modern style, with lots of oak, but enough fruit for balance. Drink now through 2011.

Tender and expressive, this red offers black raspberry, boysenberry, cocoa and tobacco flavors, generous on the palate, but with gentle tannins. Not muscular, but intriguing and harmonious. Drink now through 2011.

Bright purple. Deep, oaky aromas of candied blackberry, cassis and plum, with suggestions of white pepper, mocha and vanilla. Supple and medium-bodied but also nicely focused, the sweet dark berry flavors gently lifted by suave, sneaky acidity. Lush, sweet and long on the finish, with expanding blackberry and black raspberry flavors.
