Delicious. Complex spices from the Granache. Drank next to the Lan 2005 Rioja (well-rated by Wine Spectator) and the Valsacro is clearly a meatier choice.

The 2001 Rioja, made from 70-year old Grenache, 28-year old Tempranillo, and 25-year old Mazuelo, is a serious, structured, backward effort displaying notes of lead pencil shavings, black cherries, cedar and licorice. It is a medium-bodied, attractive, elegant Rioja with moderately high tannin, excellent depth, and fine purity as well as personality. Still tightly knit, it will benefit from another year or two of bottle age, and should last for a decade.
