Bodegas Valdemar 2007
This opens with a big fruity nose touched with a bit of chalky soil, white pepper and milky oak but air turned this into a box of woody pencils. Big acids that are definitely a little orange juicy wash away an initial blast of soft and creamy fruit. The wood is a bit too raw as are the copious wood tannins that overwhelm the simple core of red currant fruit. There is freshness here but the typical red cherry fruit is just too weak to break through the gritty, drying tannins. 80ptsAdd winemaker's notes

picked up for $12.99 Amazing concentration of developed fruit, spice and earth aromas and flavors. One of the best Crianza I've ever had for the money.
Slight vegetation over hints of oak that leads to wet earth and spice, very pithy (woody) in the after-taste.
This was the second tempranillo we have had, and this one was the best yet! It is bright ruby red, lots of sediment and a high sugar content. This wine is 90% tempranillo and 10% mazuelo. It has a oaky and deep earth aroma, mixed with the scents of cherry and plum. The taste follows the aroma, with the strong taste of the vines being the primary taste, with the cherry and plum undertones firmly in place. There was also a slight note of lime for some acidity. At first and in the middle of the drink it is very wet, and has a dry finish. This wine is terrific with stews and red meats.
It is a good "Crianza." It's better than some of the new world reds cost $15 definitely. Red fruits dominant, very typical young tempranillo.
Very nice - strong but balanced. Good buy.

One of Spain's most modern wineries, Valdemar is noted for their silky-smooth Riojas that balance ripe Tempranillo fruit with nicely toasty oak. Their Crianza is the pinnacle of their house style.
Klares, intensives Kirschrot.
Konzentrierte, gut deckende kirschrote Farbe.
