Bodegas Sierra Salinas Mourvedre Blend Alicante Mira 2007

Member Review by jtryka:

This wine is an inky purple toward the center of the glass, that bleeds to a lovely garnet around the edges. The nose is a nice blend of tart cherry, leather and some earthy notes of forest floor, or as some of my friends would say, a bit of a barnyard smell. The taste is very interesting, with some notes of tart cherry up front, quickly followed by a lovely combination of oak, truffle and dried herbs. The finish is quite tannic, but it's also fairly long, making this a rather pleasant sipping wine. The building was based on two main principles: thermal isolation and the exploitation of gravity in order to make the wine racking easier. The first aim has been achieved by placing the oak barrels in the cool basement cellar of the building and also utilizing the air conditioning system during hottest seasons. The wine making area is north-facing with the purpose of assisting in the control of the high temperatures reached in this suntrap area. A second main aim tries to ensure the integrity of the grapes by avoiding any pump racking. The winery consists of three heights, in such a way that the grapes take up the transformation as they start going down through the various levels of the building. The vinification plant is placed on the first floor, the pressing area on the second one and the bottling plant on the third (basement cellar). Read less

This Monastrell from Alicante does not spend time in the oak barrels that are so commonly used in Jumilla. The fruit is concentrated, dark, and rich, with pleasing hints of coffee and a touch of tannic rusticity.

This Monastrell from Alicante does not spent time in the ubiquitous oak barrels that afflict so many of its brethren from Jumilla. The fruit is concentrated, dark, and rich, with pleasing hits of coffee and a touch of tannic rusticity.
