Bodegas Sierra Cantabria Tempranillo Rioja Crianza 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

A little musky on the nose with some early floral flourishes, followed by some nice, brushy elements as well. There’s a light lashing of vanilla oak with some walnut tones, all over slightly creamy smelling raspberry fruit and hints of pomegranates. A touch dull on entry, but this opens quickly in the mouth to unfurl lovely bitter cherry fruit in a soft but not unstructured package. There are some nice sharp mineral tones here, and the fruit is dense and firm, driving the cherry tones across the moderately long finish. The acidity pops after a bit of air, adding some more freshness and helping to develop more red berry inner mouth perfumes. This does show a bit of heat on the finish. 89pts

Sierra Cantabria has made its wine under this brand since 1957, from its 90 hectares of vineyards. It has an average age of 35 years and is situated in a unique location, between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. This mountain range has given the name to the winery and protects the vineyard from the cold winds from the north, creating a specific microclimate for the cultivation of the vines and therefore providing a differentiated personality to our wines. This wine was a bit too spicy on the nose, kind of like a scented candle. Lots of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla flavors. Not my favorite.

The 2007 Crianza was aged in seasoned French and American oak for 15 months before bottling without filtration. Smoke, leather, cinnamon, incense, and blackberry are some of the elements jumping from the glass of this smooth-textured, generously stuffed, savory offering. Excellent volume and length suggest that this exceptional value will provide enjoyment through 2019. (aged in two- and three-year-old French and American barriques Ruby-red. Lively black raspberry and cassis aromas are complicated by licorice and Asian spices. Juicy, brisk and sharply focused, with impressive intensity to its fresh dark berry and spice flavors. Very youthful and focused; manages to be both broad and light on its feet, with very good finishing intensity and length. This chewy red has firm tannins and toasty, smoky oak flavors, which overshadow modest black cherry and blackberry notes. A leafy note keeps the finish fresh. Drink now through 2013. 3,000 cases imported. -TM ** SOLD O...
