Editorial Reviews for Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Reserva Especial
Rather woody on the nose but nice autumnal as well with notes of dried leaves and flowers as well as muddy earth flirting under the oak. There’s nice fruit here as well, cherried and lightly musky with hints of leather and medicinal spice. This is moderately rich but super well polished and elegant with a wonderfully purity to the fruit. The wood is coasting under the surface adding a bit of spice and a solid foundation to the black cherry fruit that is gently dappled with licorice, leather and vaguely medicinal notes. The tannins pop through a touch on the backend before reintegrating with the soft, luscious fruit on the vanilla topped finish. This could be a touch more complex but epitomizes Rioja Reserva to me. Will age well over the short term, but due to its modest acidity it’s drinking well already. 92pts
Very oaky, with dark chocolate notes thrown in. Fruity with hints of heat, tannins, and spice. A bit strong for my tastes, but very good
Dark chocolatiness on the the aroma with almonds and dark cherry fruit. Ripe fruit tannins on the mouth, very soft and interesting. The finish is mouthwatering. Fairly easy to drink.
dark, rustic aromas, old world classic style, nicely balanced of acid, fruit, and tannins with a little heat on the end. crushed cranberries, dried red fruit, lovely expression of reserva rioja
Wet and oaky on the nose. Full and strong but relaxed flavor, very tasty. After taste like a soft and delicious medicinal cherry cough syrup.
