Bodegas Ramon Bilbao Tempranillo Rioja Rioja Gran Reserva 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

"This vintage was classified by The Regulating Council as GOOD. We suffered a frost on April 5th with a temperature of 0,5 degrees below zero. It caused important damages in the vineyards of Viña Tondonia where the quantity of grapes was reduced by 30%. There was another spring frost on April 16th of which the damages became evident at the end of June. All the tempranillo from all our vineyards suffered the cold and rainy days of June and, due to this, the pollenization was not good. As a consequence, we had the second shortest harvest in terms of quantity of the last 10 years. We started harvesting on October 3rd with the white grapes and on the 7th with the reds, finishing on the 26th of the same month. The weather during the harvest was irregular and with lack of light so the smaller quantity helped the final maturation. The quality was good with averages of 13% alcohol contain for white grapes and 12,8% for the reds. Both, white and red grapes were healthy. Until today all the Reserva wines have evolved very well and are showing with an elegant quality." -Winery

An elegant and refined style of Rioja - earthy, dried red fruit on the nose, with a medium-body and notes of dried herbs, dried red fruits, and savory spice on the palate.

Good example of value wines from Spain. This tempranillo is really enjoyable and consistent from vintage-to-vintage.

Coming from the family-run and very traditional Lopez de Heredia estate, this wine has notes of strawberry, blood orange, pomegranate, coconut, and exotic spices. Viña Bosconia is produced from the juice of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, aged for three years in American oak barrels. The winery is one of the few in Rioja still owned by its founding family.

Silky and racy, this traditional-style red delivers dried cherry, tobacco, orange peel, vanilla and spice flavors that mingle over light, firm tannins, fueled by crisp acidity. Not a big wine, but has energy and length. Drink now through 2022.

Cubillo is Lopez's answer to Rioja Crianza. Following the style of all their wines, this wine could be labeled a class above - as a Reserva - but they keep it a Crianza. It compares to most other Rioja wineries' Reservas since the wine is aged 3 years in oak, followed by another 2-3 years in bottle. The resulting wine is fruit-forward but with developed, older wine aromas of cherries and spices. This wine pairs nicely with Queso de la Serena, a gooey, pungent, raw Merino sheep's milk cheese available online at Murray's Cheese.

The 2002 Vina Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho and 10% between Mazuelo and Graciano sourced from their Tondonia vineyard located in a large meander of the Ebro River on the outskirts of Haro. It is aged for six years in used barrels, racked twice per year during its upbringing and fined with egg whites before being bottled unfiltered. It has a slightly reduced nose that benefits from air contact, with shy aromas of cherries in liqueur, tea leaves, fine leather, game, blood, spice box and cigar ash, showing some evolution. The light to medium-bodied palate is balanced, with high acidity, but perhaps a little fragile, showing the difficulties of the vintage, as 2002 was a very difficult year in Rioja. 250,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2014–2019.

Vivid ruby. Musky red fruits, cherry, pipe tobacco and a hint of vanilla on the fragrant nose. Juicy and tightly focused, offering tangy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of candied rose. Finishes on a tangy note, with a hint of blood orange, repeating florality and silky tannins coming up late. This is ready to drink but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it age gracefully.
