Bodegas Ramon Bilbao Tempranillo Rioja Rioja Gran Reserva 1998
"This blend of viura with ten percent malvasia from the López de Heredia family’s historic vineyard in Haro has become a wine geek obsession. It’s a wine out of time, a throwback to a different era when old vines produced fruit with a concentrated mineral essence of its place, when growers left the fruit to ferment in old wood without adding yeast, then aged it in cellars thick with black mold, first in old barrels, then in bottle, tending the wine until it was just reaching maturity, and selling it for what you might spend on a simple, one-year-old Burgundy. Open this traditional white Rioja and you’ll find a fresh and fragrant wine, the vibrant fruit flavors hinting at white raspberry and kumquat, the wood age lending a buzz of ginger, cinnamon and honeycomb. The detail in the flavor grows more precise as the wine gains luscious, creamy textures with a day of air. Delicious....95" W&S 12/13

I really tried to love this wine, but I think it just didn't have the right context at the party I brought it to. A funky rosado that is extremely complex. Would love to try again with very few, if any other people around....
Really? I am the only person to review this wine? Really? C'mon Snooth-folks... you disappoint. This is a great wine and actually quite a nice wine to go with a variety of foods (we drank it with a 10-course meal recently (amongst other things)). Did I say "nice"? I meant "unusual". The latest vintage is 1998 (in 2009). It's a rose'. It gets a lot of oxygen and ages in huge old barrels. My first reaction is that it tastes like sherry, but with a note of red fruit. Good amount of body and slightly high acidity. Nutty (white fleshy nuts) with a hint of fresh fruit about mid-palate. Oh, and the label is just awesome. A really distinctive and handsome label. And being that it's had a good bit of exposure to oxygen, it seems pretty indestructible.

This rosado has a copper-orange color with gold at the rim and red at the core. The nose is a mesmerizing, ever-changing mosaic of orange, cinnamon, tobacco, and stones. On the palate it shows complex flavors of apricot, pomegranate, cinnamon, butterscotch, and cloves, then becomes delicate and ethereal on the finish.
