Bodegas Ramon Bilbao Tempranillo Rioja Rioja Gran Reserva 1989

Member Review by gabriellaopaz:

A consistent brilliant dark honey in color with a unctuous honey, ripe pear and butterscotch nose. The aroma reminds me of a Portuguese desert right when it comes out of the oven, gooey and filled with creamy egg custard with a honey glaze. In the mouth, the wine is bone dry with good acidity and a lush round mouthfeel. On the palate, this wine reminds me of mead, with rich honey and buttercup flavors ending in a long elegant citrus and honey finish. 4.0

Actually had the '90 at a nice restaurant. Very full, nice balance of acidity and tanin, and opened up nicely over the length of the meal -- worked well with game especially, as well as the cheese course.

Lopez de Heredia excels in their production of white wines. This is a blend of Viura and Malvasia from the riverside vineyard Tondonia. Caramel, roasted coffee bean and white pear characterize this wine.
