Bodegas Primicia Rioja 2009

Member Review by milkymistress:

Started with a 2008 Malbec tonight, then moved to this Rioja. I love riojas, normally for the fruit and low tannin, this vintage was rather astringent on the nose, the sip and the aftertaste. It's not the harshest I've ever had, but, it's def not smooth. In this case, I got what I paid for. I'm the wine drinker that likes to be pleasantly surprised by a good deal.

Casa Primicia, the oldest building in the town of Laguardia, is the place where, from the 15th century onwards, the Church used to collect tithes from its serfs, consisting of one tenth of the harvest, including grapes, and also the primicias. Over five hundred years later, in 1973, Casa Primicia was showing signs of its great age. The time-worn wooden-framed roof was close to collapse, and the historic long cellars hadn't stored any wine for some time. A vine-grower from Laguardia, Julián Madrid, rescued this historic building, restoring the long cellars and making wine once more in the stone troughs. Through his pioneering spirit, Casa Primicia Wineries came into being. Casa Primicia Wineries has harvested numerous awards at national and international level. In recent years, it's the only winery in Spain that can claim to have won the Grand Prix d'Honneur at the prestigious Bordeaux Fair in 1993 and the prize for Best European Wine at the 2002 Japan Wine Challenge in Tokyo. In 2007 three of the winery's wines, Curium, Carravalseca and Primicia Reserve, made it over the 90-point bar in North American critic Robert Parker's famed list, in addition to the distinction conferred on Casa Primicia Wineries' wines each year in the main national and international magazines. Not as oakey as I expected but still had that warm spicy dark cherry taste to it.

Bodegas Primicia is among the oldest, most prestigious Rioja houses and wins huge acclaim for their authentic, barrel-aged gems. Super-critic Robert Parker is a BIG fan, touting much of their line as best buys, and Decanter names them in their Top 20 Rioja Producers! This unique single vineyard rarity is made from 100% Mazuelo aka Carignan the grape traditionally grown in the Languedoc region of France. From the superb 2005 vintage he grapes were hand-harvested and aged in oak. It shows rich black fruit, anise, tarragon and peppery spice. A very delicious and unique Rioja for a value price. Wine Advocate Vintage Rating: 92 not sponsored by or affiliated with The Wine Spectator, The Wine Advocate or the International Wine Cellar.

This dry red is made from Tempranillo grapes. It has red fruit flavors and good acidity.
