Bodegas Pittacum Bierzo Tinto 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

*89 Points - Luis Guittierez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate August 2013* Bodegas Pittacum was purchased several years ago by Terras Gauda who were looking to find a red wine with distinctive personality, and is located in the pretty village of Arganza in the D.O Bierzo. The wine is produced from the fashionable Mencia grape, local to the region, and has an intense cherry-red colour with a striking purplish rim. It is marked by a particularly complex bouquet, with a wide range of aromas including berry fruits (blackberry, raspberry), liquorice and mineral tones, pleasant woody hints, spices - pepper and oregano - layered over a backdrop redolent of smoked cocoa. Warm in the mouth with a significant concentration of fruit, this is dense and fleshy with sweet tannins and a persistent balsamic finish. "The Mencia grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged for eight months in French and American oak barrels, and a further two years in bottle. By the time it hits the shelves, it should be ready to drink. The aromas of wild berries are intermixed with some white coffee and toffee. The palate brings some spicy notes, with vegetable coal, dark berries and a mineral hint. Drink 2014-2017." 89 Points - Luis Guittierez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate August 2013

Since Viñedos y Bodegas Pittacum first opened for bussines, its mission has been clear: to create wines with personality, wich - without losing sight of the hallmark features of the Mencía variety and the local area and climate - bear a unique stamp. Personality, reliability and quality are the tree key words that define our commitment. The quality of a great wine inevitably depends on the excellence of the raw material. The productivity and age of the vines are key factors in achieving a fine product. The fact that different places have different soils, slopes, orientations and microclimates means that we can obtain grapes with characteristics that also differ widely. Each variety is processed separately, before being mixed in the exactly the right proportions. Our extensive knowledge and experience of wine-making in the region ensures that at our winery only the finest grapes are used for the finest wine. Our winery is located in Arganza, a town with a longstanding vine-growing and wine-making heritage, and nestled in the extraordinarily beautiful landscape of the "Bierzo Region". An area with its own inimitable accents that make it stand apart from any other wine-producing region in the Iberian Peninsula. A modern building houses everything needed for the processing of our grapes. While the casks in which we age our wines silenty sleep in a sturdy stone farmhouse Read less
