Bodegas Pinord Priorat Balcons 2007

External Review by Great Wines Direct:

Bodegas Pinord is a family business which was founded 150 years ago. The Penedés district is situated between Barcelona and Tarragona, with the mountains of Montserrat marking the border in the north and the Mediterranean in the South. The soil is varied, contrasting from chalky clay to sandstone with distinct differences in depth so that the vines may take root. The mild Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing vines, indeed there is evidence that the Romans planted vineyards here. The slightly wetter weather in the valleys means that there is no need for irrigation. Grapes : Garnacha 41%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Sauvignon 24% Maker : José Maria Tetas Region : Spain / Priorat Notes : Toasted vanilla aromas and mature fruits mix with spicy aromas such as pepper and clove and mineral notes from the licorella soils. Serve : At room temperature with red meat, roasts or cheese. ABV : 14.5% Suitable for Vegetarians

In 1942, José María Tetas set up the current winery in Vilafranca del Penedès, just four kilometres from the original estate. Having inherited the family methods and traditions, it has gradually grown until it has now become one of the most highly reputed wineries in the region and the whole country. At the present time, PINORD’s production facilities have an output capacity of over five million bottles per year. Nevertheless, traditional family standards are maintained and care is taken to avoid over production, something that generally results in a loss of quality. Two enologists and a laboratory with the most up-to-date analytical and quality control equipment ensure that the long-standing family tradition continues to be compatible with today’s most demanding quality, production and health controls demonstrating that traditional methods are not necessarily at variance with the implementation of the most rigorous standards. The early wines soon began to win a name and prestige for themselves as a result of their high quality. Since then, generation after generation, year after year, the family’s vineyards have continued to expand, the local varieties have considerably improved and the family name has become inseparably linked to the wine of El Penedès. The Bodegas Pinord vineyards are situated just a few miles from Vilafranca. We are proud to be able to say that they are grouped round the Muntanyans Hermitage standing on a hill from which you can see a large part of El Penedès. Read less
