Bodegas Muga Tempranillo Blend Rioja Reserva 2004
Bodegas Muga is a celebrated winery in the Railway District in the town of Haro in Rioja, Spain. Moved to the present location in 1971 by the children of founder Isaac Muga Martinez, Muga Winery was been producing a variety of wines since its founding in 1932. Bodegas Muga currently is in control of one thousand acres of fertile wine growing land, and is one of the few wineries in the world that owns its own cooperage.

Nice and well priced rioja. Ripe fruit and light oak taste. My impression was that the bottle even got better on the second day.
i love a good rioja, but this one tasted a bit too oak-y for me. still a great wine, food friendly and good for sipping.
Tempranillos need time. This hefty fellow is still a bit prickly with acid. Advice to decant and wait a day is exact. Works with rib steak or cream cheeses. Beautiful color and legs. Plan is to try to live longer that it does. Will rate higher in a few years.
Ripe cherry and raspberry, vegetation, and light oak in the nose. Tannic and vegetal with some nice fruit mid-palate.
still young after 7 years, this is a complex, warm & flavorful wine. will definitely buy another one.

Deep and earthy, and packing more than a punch. This is big-time modern Rioja in brash form. The nose is gorgeous, dealing milk chocolate and fresh soil. The palate is a tight blend of tannins, acids and zesty flavors. Big and hedonistic for sure, but you'll love the plum, pepper and espresso flavors. Still feverishly tannic; hold at least until 2005.
Medium red. Gamey red berry aromas complicated by tobacco, leather and mineral qualities; a gentle vanilla quality contributes to the old school impression. Pliant red fruit flavors take on a firm edge with air, as well as a riper bitter cherry character. Finishes with solid tannic grip; this is pretty interesting already but should loosen up in a couple of years.
The 1998 Reserva Rioja (70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and the rest Mazuelo and Graciano) was aged two years in French and American oak prior to being bottled without fiitration. Four thousand cases were exported to America. A sweet perfume of leather, cherries, forest floor, and spice box aromas is followed by a medium-bodied, supple, fresh Rioja meant to be consumed over the next 4-5 years.
This spicy red has a food-friendly structure, firm but balanced. Subdued cherry flavors are less prominent than cola, cedar and herb notes, which will appeal to fans of the more traditional style. Drink now through 2002.
(This is Muga's modern-style Rioja, aged for 22 months in American oak vats, then 16 months in new Allier barriques; as with the other Muga Riojas, this is bottled without filtration) Medium red-ruby. Subdued fruit aromas of plum, currant and raspberry, plus coffee, smoke and spice from the oak. Juicy but backward; extremely young and tightly wound. This has fruit of steel, with strong acids contributing to the wine's sharp flavor definition and powerful impression of spine. Juicy, sappy finish is very long and aromatic. Decant this highly concentrated wine for at least a few hours or cellar it for a decade.
A classic dusty, red fruit nose and a ripe red fruit flavor. Plum and tobacco are complemented by spicy oak notes. This rustic style is earthy and medium bodied with an extended full finish. Enjoy with an aged Black Angus burger, with everything on it.
The unfiltered, dark ruby/garnet-colored 1995 Reserva exhibits an attractive, smoky, dried herb, lead pencil, Graves-like bouquet with hints of sweet red currant fruit. The wine is flavorful and medium-bodied, with no hard edges. Toasty new oak makes an appearance along with cherry and currant flavors in the silky-smooth finish. Drink it over the next 2-4 years, although I suspect it will last longer.
