Another example of why Spanish wines are such good buys. Medium-bodied and some up-front fruit--cherries, mostly--but also some vanilla. Tartness around the edges is a delight. Very easy to drink without food, but I'll bet it is even better with. US$22.99 at the Wine Club in Santa Ana in 2012

I opened this and decanted it for about an hour or so to really let it open up and boy was it worth it. It was a lot darker in colour like ink compared with other Rioja's I've had lately. It had a beautiful nose of strawberries and vanilla with a little tobacco and earth thrown in. The real pleasure was in the tasting, silky smooth, elegant and not harsh at all. The balance was perfect with a slight initial biterness turning to a lovely sweetish finish. Strawberries were again evident in the taste with vanilla, oak and that leather so prevalent in a lot of Rioja but none of them were overpowering. This is up there with the better wines I've tasted.

Bright ruby. Vibrant, seductive perfume of black raspberry, powdered rose, anise and minerals. Weighty but lively cherry and dark berry flavors are brightened by zesty minerals, picking up a candied licorice quality with aeration. The finish repeats the deep dark berry note and leaves exotic flowers and minerals behind. Very elegant wine that suavely blends richness and finesse.

The purple-colored 2005 Muga Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and the balance Mazuelo and Graciano. It was aged for six months in wood vats followed by two years in new French and American oak. It delivers an alluring nose of cedar, tobacco, earth notes, mineral, and black cherry. This is followed by an elegant wine with good depth and enough ripe tannin to evolve for several years. Nicely balanced and long in the finish, it will be at its best from 2012 to 2020 if not longer.

Deep red. Highly fragrant, Bordeaux-like bouquet of red berries, smoky minerals, flowers and camphor. Supple red and dark berry flavors stain the palate and are given spine by juicy minerality. The fruit expands on the finish, which is strikingly sweet, broad and persistent. This smokes pretty much any Bordeaux that I can think of for close to this price.

This red is focused and graceful, with black cherry and tart plum flavors framed by leafy, smoky and minerally notes. Shows a good balance of light tannins and lively acidity. Drink now through 2015.

The 2007 Reserva has an attractive, bashful bouquet that demands coaxing, with scents of singed leather and allspice. The palate is very well-balanced with crisp tannin. It is a little rustic but there is a surfeit of personality. It has lovely leafy red fruit married with white pepper and leather towards the meaty finish. Drink 2015andndash;2030.

Enticing vanilla aromas give way to light but fresh flavors of cherries, vanilla and licorice. Firm and light-bodied. Drink now.

Focused and balanced, this vivacious red delivers black cherry, mineral, mint and citrus peel flavors, with firm but well-integrated tannins and a fresh, floral finish. Drink now through 2012.

Winemaker's Notes:

91+ points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): The 2007 Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano aged initially for 6 months in wood vats followed by 24 months in 60% new French and American oak prior to bottling without filtration. It displays classic Rioja aromas of cedar, leather, mineral, a hint of balsamic, and assorted black fruits. Layered on the palate but slightly austere at present, it has the structure to evolve for another 4-6 years... Drink this impressive Rioja from 2015 to 2027. (Jun 2011)
