Bodegas Muga Reserva Unfiltered Rioja 2013

Member Review by Kristin Watts:

Delicious rich cherry here, with some great ash and charcoal notes that balance out the fruit. A bit of plum accent laced with a hint of sweet licorice makes me want more!

Vinification: Fermentation with indigenous yeasts in oak vats. Aged for 24 months in barrels made from oak chosen in our cooperage. Before bottling the wine is fined using fresh egg whites. After bottling, the wine will undergo a refining process for at least a further 12 months in our cellar. Tasting notes: On the nose, it displays ripe, dark fruit, grape syrup, bitter chocolate and as it opens up, hints of spices such as pepper, vanilla and a little mountain scrub begin coming through. On the palate, it is balanced, with a soft touch of acidity to give it good potential for cellaring. The attack is broad and long, with an evolution in the mouth which spreads silky and mineral sensations before concluding with sweet tannins which still have a bit of “grip” and will benefit from some “time out” for their full integration. In the retro-olfaction the notes of oak and mountain scrub are more clearly defined, repeating the impressions noted in direct olfaction but with a greater preponderance. It is a vintage with “character”. Grapes: 70% Tempranillo 20% Garnacha 7% Mazuelo 3% Graciano

Muga's red wines begin with the 2006 Muga Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, with the balance Mazuelo and Graciano. It was aged for 6 months in wooden vats before spending 2 years in 60% new French and American oak. Purple-colored with an already complex bouquet of pain grille, mineral, violets, black cherry, and blackberry, on the palate it is smooth-textured, layered, and concentrated. It conceals enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will offer optimal drinking from 2012 to 2026. It is an excellent value in serious Rioja. (70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha and 10% mazuelo and graciano, aged in a blend of 60% French and 40% American oak, all new) Glass-staining ruby. Exotic, oak-spiced red berry and cherry aromas, with hints of mocha and rose. Round and seamless in texture, offering sweet raspberry and cassis flavors, with a touch of bitter chocolate. Supple tannins sneak in on the finish, which features notes of ripe dark fruit and baking spices. Drinks very well right now.
