Needed time for the alc to blow off (About 45 mins.) and then it really shined. Typical tempranillo red and dark berry fruits, dry and linear, with dusty tannins and a juicy aftertaste. This has faded over the last year and should be drank now. 89 points - Paul

Gift from Jessica. 10/2016. Spanish reds. Some say the future of reds. Not if this is an example. Rioja, needs to step up there export game. Think like New Zealand, where nothing gets exported until it passes a panel tasting.

boy is this expressive but controlled; the nose is full of dark fruit, slight mint and herbs--- imagine overturning an herb garden somewhere in the back country, rustling the soil and plants around, and then shoving your nose into the dirt. It kind of reminds me of that. Ripe dark fruit otherwise, well balanced tannins. A beautifully done rioja :)

I tasted one bottle and ran back for 6 more before they were all gone. Montecillo is one of my favorite Spanish Wine Producers. In my opinion this aged bottle of loveliness is what a Temparnillo should taste like. The color is a dark purple, like an opaque, romantic midnight dance. This dry medium body wine has silky tannins, The aging has greatly subdued the alcohol taste for a perfect balance of what every wine should be. I tasted a field of ripe blueberries, My date described it as spicy dark fruit. The finish coated my tongue for more then a half hour. It lingered like memories of your first love. I came home to look at my tongue thinking it would be purple, due to the long finish, it was not. This is my type of wine. I am certain it will be loved with anyone I share it with.

Silky smooth with elegant fruit, fine dusty tannins and very pleasing complexity, this wine offers a classic expression of Rioja.

Selected Number 5 on Food & Wine's Top 100 Bottles to Drink Right Now! From the impressive 2001 vintage, the centuries old aging process for Gran Reserva of a minimum 60 months, 18 of them in oak, assures that this Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Gran Reserva is now at a peak of perfection! Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "If you like a traditionally styled Rioja then this will be highly appealing. Aromas of dill, tobacco and dried fruits are enticing, while the palate veers toward subtle fruits, more tobacco and finely intertwined acidity. This is a wonderful wine from an excellent vintage, thus there’s absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t age gracefully for another decade."
