boy is this expressive but controlled; the nose is full of dark fruit, slight mint and herbs--- imagine overturning an herb garden somewhere in the back country, rustling the soil and plants around, and then shoving your nose into the dirt. It kind of reminds me of that. Ripe dark fruit otherwise, well balanced tannins. A beautifully done rioja :)

I tasted one bottle and ran back for 6 more before they were all gone. Montecillo is one of my favorite Spanish Wine Producers. In my opinion this aged bottle of loveliness is what a Temparnillo should taste like. The color is a dark purple, like an opaque, romantic midnight dance. This dry medium body wine has silky tannins, The aging has greatly subdued the alcohol taste for a perfect balance of what every wine should be. I tasted a field of ripe blueberries, My date described it as spicy dark fruit. The finish coated my tongue for more then a half hour. It lingered like memories of your first love. I came home to look at my tongue thinking it would be purple, due to the long finish, it was not. This is my type of wine. I am certain it will be loved with anyone I share it with.

18 mos in French oak, 2 years of battle aging leads to a slightly darker color than the Crianza bottling. Aromas are much shyer at first, but a vigorous swirl yields plum, blackberry, and spicebox aromas. Less apparent tannins and acidity than the red label, with berries and spicy clove flavors. Beautiful texture, and a lovely spicy aftertaste. BAlance in more elegant and sophisticated.

Initial "Tart" nose--smells a tad sour. A few minutes of air seems to help it--shifts to something of a spicy thing, anise, clove. Not a lot of fruit on the initial taste--not necessarily a bad thing. Earthy and woody flavors--smoky. Still some noticeably tannin around the edge of the tongue. Little bit of a bitter thing on the back of the throat. Best thing might be the finish--very mellow and enjoyable and lasts for quite a few seconds. US$19.99 at Total Wines in 2011.

Nice enough Rioja Gran Reserva, but not great. Lots of dark fruit, plum and dried fig, some smoke and earth tones with a little bit of that tempranillo mustiness.

Far Niente Sold Out! From the impressive 2001 vintage, the centuries old aging process for Gran Reserva of a minimum 60 months, 18 of them in oak, assures that this Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Gran Reserva is now at a peak of perfection! Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "If you like a traditionally styled Rioja then this will be highly appealing. Aromas of dill, tobacco and dried fruits are enticing, while the palate veers toward subtle fruits, more tobacco and finely intertwined acidity. This is a wonderful wine from an excellent vintage, thus there’s absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t age gracefully for another decade."
