Bodegas Izadi Salbide Rioja 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine: "Salbide is a local name meaning "Horses' Path." It refers to theancient routes leading from the vineyards across the nearby Sierra de Cantabria mountain range. The same mountains protect the very old vineyards from the strong northerly winds and allow the juicy red Tempranillo grapes to ripen perfectly. Made from vines aged 30-40 years. Aging: 4 months in 100% American oak barrels (20% New, 80% no more than 4 years). Notes of ripe black berries and fruity character of a young Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa. Elegant with a long afterstate that brings back floral and fruity memories." - Importer Winery: "Vina Izadi was in fact the Anton family’s first winery estate (even before Villacreces) as the family already owned old vineyards in the DOC. Located in Rioja Alavesa, Izadi aims to produce wines that express the character of the local varieties. They are developing their wines to be fresh with a touch of modernity -without forgetting tradition. The Anton Family founded Izadi in 1987 after years of running vineyards in Villabuena de Alaba. The Antons also own a one star Michellin Restaurant (Zaldiaran) in the hamlet of Vitoria. Transformation of the winery happened in 1997, when Don Gonzalo Anton hired Mariano Garcia (winemaker for 30 years at Vega Secilia). Together with Angel Ortega (winemaker for Izadi), they created what we now recognize as the Izadi style: robust yet refined, modern and international. The word Izadi means Nature. The vineyards of Izadi are located deep in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, in the triangle formed by three villages, Villabuena, Ábalos and Samaniego. The triangle pictured on the label of Izadi represents these three villages." - Importer
