The 2001 Faustino I Gran Reserva is a modern rendition of the old-time classical Riojas, with black rather than red fruit notes and developed aromas of leather and game, black licorice and Chinese ink. It’s medium-bodied, with good acidity and it has a slightly dry finish. I’d have expected a bit more meat and concentration from this vintage. Drink 2014–2019.
This supple red shows traditional character, with tobacco, sanguine and leather notes around a core of cherry and dried herbs. The light tannins and balsamic acidity give way to a spicy, earthy finish. Drink now.
Rusty and mature looking, this is woodsy, dry and rooty on the nose, with whiffs of tree bark and tobacco running alongside cherry and berry notes. It’s mature, with flavors of stewed plum, herbs and spice that are straight from the textbook, while the finish is dry, earthy and showing core acidity. Drink now.

Out of the the more than 3,000 wines reviewed in 2013 by Europe's most prestigious wine journal Decanter, they selected this Rioja as their Wine of the Year. Faustino produces Gran Reserva in only the best vintages. With 1,625 acres of vineyards, located in the upper portion of the Rioja Alavesa, Faustino’s Gran Reserva wines are all estate grown and bottled. The wine is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. After fermentation it ages aged for 28 months in 80% American oak barrels from West Virginia and 20% French Vosges oak barrels. Then it matures in the Bodegas' cellar, softening to a silken smoothness and taking on immense complexity. Decanter's editors rated it 97 points overall. One wrote "A top example of an aged Rioja. Powerful yet elegant with a complex array of flavors. Delicate use of creamy oak and spicy, leathery notes with ripe bramble fruits leading to a mineral finish. A classy wine. Delicious to drink now but its freshness will enable further cellaring."
