Full-bodied and earthy, with red plum, cola and tomato aromas. The palate mixes leafy, herbal flavors with candied cherry, and the combination proves to have issues. Finishes gritty, with hard tannins. More traditional than modern in style.

This 60-hectare bodega has been in the hands of the Vargas family for 4 generations and produces benchmark Riojas. Recently a new state of the art winery has been installed and Bordeaux-based Michel Rolland has been retained as a consultant. The grapes are fermented and then pressed in new oak barrels for 15 months. They are then kept in bottle a further 2 years prior to release. Only red Reservas are produced, and the wines are well-structured, fruit-driven and stylish.

Alluring. This brooding red shows dark flavors of brandied plums, dark chocolate and licorice; firm and balanced on the palate, with a long finish of spice and smoke. It has character and depth. Drink now through 2008.

Intense ripe cherry color. Complex aromas, an elegant bouquet and warm flavor, with a perfect mingling of acidity and the noble tannins which its aging in oak provides.
