(75% tempranillo, 10% mazuelo, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% garnacha): Bright purple. Assertive aromas of blueberry, dried flowers and vanilla, plus a hint of musky herbs. Densely packed and focused, with very good energy to its dark berry, floral and mocha flavors. Shows a sweet quality on the persistent finish, which is firmed by gentle tannins.
The hand-picked grapes come from our vineyard estate, Hacienda Pradolagar—124 acres of bush vines with the average age of 28 years and endowed with poor, shallow, infertile calcareous-clay soils. Marques de Vargas subscribes to the environmentally friendly concept and practice of sustainable winegrowing; herbicides and pesticides are not used in our vineyards, and only occasionally are organic fertilizers employed. The wine is made traditionally according to the old-world methods side-by-side with the state-of-the-art technology. The wine is bottled without any fining or filtering, resulting in an unprocessed and fully natural wine.
A restrained style of Rioja--not too earthy, not too ripe, and certainly not with the lashings of coconut-tinged American oak so often found at this level--the Vargas offers red cherries, red plums, and dried roses in place of raisins and black fruits and a sense of place as much as a portrayal of Tempranillo. This is very clean, balanced, and elegant, so much so that it can be easy to overlook if you’re used to a fuller throttle style.
