Wine production in Uruguay has tripled over the last couple of years and the Tannat from France is the signature grape. Tannat makes full-bodied reds in the Madiran region of Southwest France. In Uruguay it's producing a bold, earthy wine with good complexity like this Reserva from Bodegas Castillo Viejo. Wine Reviewer John Mariani blogged on the Huffington Post "I found the reservas shook themselves free of harsh tannins, as in the Bodegas Castillo Viejo Catamayor Reserva 2008, which, at only 12.5 percent alcohol, had amazing body and brightness of fruit." Aged 8 months in American oak barrels this is a rich red with character and style at a great price.
