From that moment onward, Ramon did not stop making improvements. It was in the early 80s when he bought the first bottling plant. During the 90's, participation in trade fairs, tastings, and market research trips began with the full incorporation of his three sons: Ramon, Juan Pedro, and Daniel. It was during this period that the recognition and appreciation, both national and internationally, arrived. The courage and determination of a man deeply rooted began to bear fruit. The development of Bodegas Castano is unstoppable, and the improvements are never-ending. The most recent of these was completed in 2002 with the construction of state-of-the-art storage premises: completely air-conditioned, with a new cooling chamber. Read less

Spicy on the nose with notes of licorice, green anise seed, green peppercorn, mint, and lightly roasted blackcurrant and black berry fruit. This enters the mouth with notes of sandalwood and tobacco, wrapped in roasted dark cherry and blackberry fruit. The mid-palate is round and supple, though it is underpinned by significant tannins. While fairly powerful and a touch dense, this retains a certain subtlety to it, layering earthy flavors between notes of vanilla, dark fruit, coffee grinds, licorice and a little juniper spice. There is nothing elegant about this wine and it ends with a little heat and formidable if ripe tannins, but this is quite appealing for its restrained example of what Monastrell can deliver. 88pts

Earthy aroma with blackberries and oak - good strawberry fruit in the body comes through after it sits for awhile. A bit harsh when you first open it - volatile acidity and young tannins. Herb and tomato notes as well; it's kind of like drinking an artisinal pizza.

Opaque black plum hue, aromas of dark stone fruits, leather and spice, flavor notes of dark berries, dried game and leather, integrated tannins, bright acidity, with a rich mouthfeel that lingers to a moderate finish. Great Value to pair with roast meats and game dishes.

Soft ripe fruits balanced by lithe, structural-yet-refined tannins. Here and there a note of oak, woody herbs or chocolate. Tasty, engaging and with a strong backbone.

Good nutty spiciness on the nose, with dark berries. The mouth is mildly tannic, but not enough to hold the shape, and the life of the wine is cut short. I would like it if the wine was bolder, since there are some good redeemable aromatics in there.

Recently purchased at $7.95. Medium-bodied wine with dark red cherry color. Smooth on the palate with mild tannins. A bit of spice and fruit on the palate. Nice everyday wine.

Shiny red cherry color of medium structure with purple reflections. Intense aromas of ripe red fruit (blueberry and raspberry). In the mouth it is silk y, well structured and balanced. - Winery

Dark ruby. Lively redcurrant and cherry on the nose, complicated by spice and floral elements. Juicy, vibrant cherry and floral pastille flavors show very good depth, with juicy acidity adding clarity and lift. Aeration brings up deeper blackberry and anise notes that carry through a spicy persistent finish. This has to be one of the best red wine values out there. The 2011 Monastrell Vinas Viejas (100% Monastrell - or Mourvedre - aged in stainless steel) comes from a vineyard planted at nearly 2,400-foot elevation with non-irrigated old bush/head pruned vines. More herbal and peppery than the less expensive Molino Loco, it is a well-made, deep, spicy, savory, earthy effort with more complexity and personality than its sibling. Consume this unreal value over the next 2-3 years. It reminds me of a well-made French Cotes du Rhone. ** SOLD OUT **

Bodegas Casta o is located in Yecla, a small town in the north of the province of Murcia. Its boundaries exactly coincide with DO Yecla (appellation of origin), being one of the few appellations that only covers one single borough.

Great value for a full but smooth red. Easy to drink on its own, but pairs well with any robust, savory dish.
