From that moment onward, Ramon did not stop making improvements. It was in the early 80s when he bought the first bottling plant. During the 90's, participation in trade fairs, tastings, and market research trips began with the full incorporation of his three sons: Ramon, Juan Pedro, and Daniel. It was during this period that the recognition and appreciation, both national and internationally, arrived. The courage and determination of a man deeply rooted began to bear fruit. The development of Bodegas Castano is unstoppable, and the improvements are never-ending. The most recent of these was completed in 2002 with the construction of state-of-the-art storage premises: completely air-conditioned, with a new cooling chamber. Read less

Takes 45 minutes to fully open up. Once it does, abundant cherry aromas with a bit of black tea and herbs. Muted palate, with cherries, mineral notes. Takes a while for the tannins to take a back seat. Not entirely integrated and doesn't quite hang together, but once its opened its an easy drinker. Had with steak and baked potatoes.

Also known as Mourvedre, this grape is one part of the holy trinity that makes up Francersquo;s Rhocirc;ne wines. This juicy and lively Spanish wine exhibits flavors of blackberries, balsamic and spice. This would be delicious with spareribs or a spicy bean soup.

This wine has luscious flavors of ripe black and red fruits and is a full-bodied blast on the palate. Leather and earth kick in to add some backbone, and the mild astringency of the tannins keep you begging for more.

Dark ruby. Expressive redcurrant and strawberry aromas complemented by minerals and baking spices and a suave floral nuance. Very fresh red fruit flavors are nicely underpinned by juicy acidity and a note of licorice. Finishes dry, firmly structured, juicy and deep. This should sweeten up with a year of bottle age.

There are 20,000 cases of the 2002 Solanera, a formidably endowed, chunky, rich, chocolatey, melted licorice, blackberry and black currant-scented wine. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied red with loads of texture, and a luscious mid-palate revealing notions of scorched earth and black fruits. It is a sizeable effort with extremely ripe tannin, something only old vine, late harvested Mourvedre can achieve. It is a custom cuvee created only for the American marketplace, so bottles sold in Europe and in the grey market will be completely different. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years, although my instincts suggest it will last longer.

Monastrell, or Mourvèdre as it is more commonly known in French- and English-speaking parts of the globe, has a reputation for producing dry, tannic wines that occasionally reek of horse manure. Not so in sunny Spain, where a growing number of clean, berry-fruited offerings are turning up at bargain prices. This medium-weight Monastrell combines forward berry fruit with chocolate notes and just a hint of tree bark on the finish.

There are 8,500 cases of the unfined, unfiltered, prodigious 2001 Solanera, a blend of 70% ungrafted, old vine Monastrell, and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a custom cuvée specifically bottled for the American importer, Eric Solomon. It spent nearly a year in French oak, 20% of which was new. Its opaque, inky purple color is followed by glorious aromas of blue and blackberries intermixed with graphite, minerals, smoke, and scorched earth. It is splendidly concentrated and full-bodied, with no hard edges. This extraordinary wine can be drunk now, and over the next 6-8 years. This is a cutting edge effort from one of Spain's backwater, but soon to be famous appellations.
