Food Pairings for Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla Hécula
Better than the first, but not as good as previous.
[Turkey chili] Deep purple-color currant, cherry, and smoke. frequently find this dish overwhelms reds, this paired nicely. (**)
[Tuna] intense ruby; lush fruit cherry and licorice; very pleasant. Will buy more. (**)
Deep purple with thick legs. Blackberry, black cherry and black pepper all show on the nose which happens to be quite big. Sneaking in on the backend of the nose is a light minerality. Rich in the mouth with strong tannins and high acid. Almost too much. The flavors of the nose follow through though I think this wine could still use to calm down a bit. alt=3 [NR]
Did not rate. Opened for dinner and it was shut down. Almost nothing but strong tannins. Double decanted and let sit. I ended up drinking it two days later when the fruit decided to show up. Nice wine but I think it needs some time to calm down. [NR]

(65% monastrell, 15% cabernet sauvignon and 20% tintorera; this special cuvee includes the oldest monastrell vines of the producer) Bright medium ruby. Smoky black raspberry, black cherry and roast coffee aromas. Then sweet and dense but rather suave in the mouth, with complex flavors of plum, coffee, olive and Provencal herbs. Has the underlying sweetness of material to support its firm tannins. The crop level for this cuvee was just 18 hectoliters per hectare, according to the American importer, and the wine was done entirely in French oak.
There are 20,000 cases of the 2002 Solanera, a formidably endowed, chunky, rich, chocolatey, melted licorice, blackberry and black currant-scented wine. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied red with loads of texture, and a luscious mid-palate revealing notions of scorched earth and black fruits. It is a sizeable effort with extremely ripe tannin, something only old vine, late harvested Mourvedre can achieve. It is a custom cuvee created only for the American marketplace, so bottles sold in Europe and in the grey market will be completely different. Enjoy it over the next 2ndash;3 years, although my instincts suggest it will last longer.
