What to Expect

Though Mourvèdre is a grape with Spanish roots, where it is known as Monastrell, it is most closely associated with the South of France and the Bandol appelation in particular, where the grape produces rich, powerful wines that retain rustic tannins partnered with dark, wild berry flavors and gamy, leathery nuances. It is also commonly called Mataro in California.

Winemakers Notes

The Castaño family has 410 hectares of vineyards in Yecla in south eastern Spain. They have steadily improved quality over the last few years and modernised their style. They symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude and transformed into robustly modern wines. This Monastrell wine is deep, cherry red in colour, with attractive perfumes of spiced plums giving way to flavours of plum, redcurrant and persimmon supported by soft, rounded tannins. Rounded and soft through to the spicy finish.

Great value. Very drinkable, every day wine. Solid wine with a good finish.

Good value everyday wine for someone looking off the beaten path of Merlot and Cabs. Peppery with black fruit and supporting tannins. Goes with with grilled beef.

Inky violet. Deep cherry and cassis aromas complicated by an array of floral, mineral and herbal nuances. Powerful dark fruit flavors are firmed by solid tannins and lifted by gentle minerality. Picks up smoked meat and anise notes on the long, chewy finish. This could be a Bandol. Is the average buyer at this price point ready for this? Another amazing value. -International Wine CellarDense, clean and brilliant color. Magnificent fruity display (plums, fig bread combined with red fruit), medium strong balsam aromas(mentholated) which are perfectly integrated. On the palate, it is smooth read more...

Coppery and raw meat on the nose. Certainly has that blood and spice element that Mourvedre can hold. A fun and inexpensive introduction to a varietal that is often times blended away.
