What to Expect

Grenache is the main grape in many Rhone blends and most Cotes du Rhone and Chateaunuef-du-pape. It's a grape that yields soft, lightly colored yet full wines endowed with deep notes of strawberry and raspberry. While not prone to producing particularly rich or complex wines in France, Grenache is one of the world's most widely-planted grapes, producing unique expression where ever it is planted. It is particularly common in Spain as Garnacha, and Sardinia, as Canonnau,

Winemakers Notes

Deep and sweet, Tres Picos Borsao is cherry red in colour with a hint of purple tones. In the nose, there is a boundless bouquet of mature red fruits with traces of flowers that are typical of the best Garnachas. In the mouth, it is rich and well-structured simultaneously conveying flavours of blackberries, strawberries and tones of leather, vanilla and plums. Perfectly combined with a sweet and pleasant tannin, Tres Picos Borsao leaves us with a long, silky and balanced finish.

Editorial Reviews

Smells like blackberry pie. A bit zinfandel like with brambly dark fruits and lots of oak induced baking spices. Smells sweet on the nose with lots of layered vanilla, spice and roasted fruit notes. Big and think on entry with dense, chewy brambly blackberry fruit. A lot of wine with a soft, approachable character. There is sufficient structure to carry the wine but the appeal is the rich, dark coffee cream tinged blackberry pie fruits. The finish lacks the harmony of the midpalate with acidity sticking out and coming completely unintegrated on the caustic finish. 84pts

WA 91pts. - IWC 90pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2007 Tres Picos Garnacha is a worthy successor to previous vintages of this always remarkable value. Sourced from low yielding vineyards on the slopes of Moncayo Mountain, the wine was aged half in stainless steel and half in French oak for 10 months. Purple-colored, it offers up sexy aromas of cedar, underbrush, mineral, and black cherry. This leads to a layered, intense, spicy, rich Garnacha with gobs of succulent fruit, excellent balance, and a plush finish. This may well be the finest Tres Picos to date. Inky ruby. Highly complex bouquet of cherry, dark berry liqueur, iron, tobacco and dried flowers; reminded me a wine from Graves. Tangy cherry and cassis flavors are on the primal side initially but soften and gain sweetness with air. Fine tannins add grip to the long, spicy finish, which repeats the iron note. This is very promising. -International Wine Cellar 90+

Deep inky plummy red with a very young look, nose a balance of oak, alcohol and plummy fruit with a hint of menthol, medium-plus body, sweet and smoky in the mouth with a medium-long finish, soft tannins.
Excellent value with the weight and intensity associated with Aussies but with much more subtlety. $11.33 wholesale/$17 retail

Deep port-like purple-red color. Intense inky, berry nose, with cedar notes. Well-extracted, sweet fruit notes well underscored by rich, cedary tannins. Satisfying mouthfeel. Pretty decent value at its $15 retail tag. A staple.
