I tasted this wine over two nights. The first impression left me feeling so-so and not terribly impressed. The second try was quite different, so I will focus on my notes from day two. The Viña Zaco is a solid brick color, and still quite dark. The nose is dusty earth and black cherries. It tastes of chocolate, smoke, and cherries, with some herbaciousness. It is light bodied with zippy acidity and pleasant tannins. This wine just kept getting better in the glass, so I do recommend decanting it. How often do you see 90 Points under $10.00? Not very, that's right! So treat yourself to little Spanish delight with a this Vina Zaco Tempranillo while you can because at this price it wont be around for very long.

A wine with just one purpose: to be Rioja. Its character: the fruit and the expression of Tempranillo. Rebellious, authentic and delicious.

2006 Vina Zaco was chosen by Wine Spectator as one of their Top 100 Wines of 2009. Rioja Vina Zaco from Bodegas Bilbainas is a fruit-forward Tempranillo with just enough oak aging to add intriguing notes of complex spice and vanilla. 100% Tempranillo carefully vinified to bring out the rich fruit. A short cold-maceration is followed by a slow, cooler than normal fermentation with skin contact for a full two weeks to extract as much flavor and color as possible. Nine month in French and American oak followed for a complex intermingling of flavors both spicy and succulent. A great value!

WS 88pts - The 2006 was on Wine Spectators Top 100 of 2009 - According to the Spectator - This polished red delivers black cherry, espresso and mineral flavors in a silky texture over firm tannins. Leafy and floral notes linger. Not powerful, but has intensity. Drink now through 2014. 20,000 cases made.

90 Points - Wine Spectator Black cherry and blackberry flavors are framed by smoky chocolate oak in this modern red, which is taut and focused, with firm tannins and bright acidity. Drink now through 2012. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
