Zaco takes its name from one of the oldest vineyards in Bodegas Bilbainas in the Rioja Alta. But that's where Zaco's links with the past begin and end. With its abundance of fresh red berries, notes of liquorice and faint undertones of spice, Zaco is the ultimate modern expression of Rioja.
Bodegas Bilbaínas specializes in making vintage wines, and is regarded as a leader when it comes to setting wine styles. Some of the winery’s flagships are among the most famed and emblematic wines of the Rioja, foremost of which are Viña Pomal and La Vicalanda.

Leather, game and rust greet the nose with a classic Rioja profile. This is not particularly fruit-driven, instead recalling the winery and the land. Air brings out more smoky, herby notes along with a base of cranberry fruit. Smooth and polished on entry, another quintessential attribute of Rioja Reserva, this has wispy tannins and juicy acidity that make the texture a near perfect blend of brightness and a firm base. There’s more fruit on the palate. Raspberry and strawberry tones with earth, rust and herb flavors are topped with a light lashing of vanilla. The lovely finish is slightly astringent, slightly austere, long and savory. This is how I prefer my Rioja, a bit rustic! 90pts
I tasted this wine over two nights. The first impression left me feeling so-so and not terribly impressed. The second try was quite different, so I will focus on my notes from day two. The Viña Zaco is a solid brick color, and still quite dark. The nose is dusty earth and black cherries. It tastes of chocolate, smoke, and cherries, with some herbaciousness. It is light bodied with zippy acidity and pleasant tannins. This wine just kept getting better in the glass, so I do recommend decanting it. Chocolatey nose that's very mineral. Good acidity and firm tannins work well with this very fruity wine. Main flavors of blackberry, leather and licorice.

Good, simple, rioja. Strong fruit, nice tannin and oak to match. No huge depth or big finish, just a nice, wine to have with some apps

Pleasant, food-friendly wine. On its own, had some green and un-ripe flavors.
