Bodegas Beronia Tempranillo Blend Rioja Gran Reserva 2004
The grapes used for Beronia Gran Reserva are chosen in the vineyards, usually from the oldest vines. On arrival at the winery, the grapes are hand-selected on a sorting table, and only the best quality are used for Gran Reserva. The role of oak in Beronia style is very important, and much has been invested into how the wines, once in the barrel, react to different toast and styles of woods. These experiments have led Beronia to be pioneers in the use of mixed barrels, barrels with American oak slaves, and French oak ends. The wine was bottled in February 2008 where it has remained since.
Inky dark plum color. Somewhat volatile nose. Very smooth initial mouth sensation. Not a lot of fruit--some hint of blackberry, somewhat tart, very subdued tannin. This definitely a food wine. I think I'm going to get a slice of cheese to have with this first glass. US$24.99 at WIne Club in Santa Ana.
Vanilla and cocoa influence by oak. Plum, black fruit, hints of red and some blue fruit on the nose. Also a roasted meat note. Flavors of plum and sweet spice. Nice structure with flavors of mature fruit and chocolate. Long and persistent. On the back, hints of salty charcuterie. Dry wine. Nice. 91 pts.
Four and a half glasses
A surprising amount of fruit remains in this wine. Lots of pomegranite juice, black cherry, and red plums. With air, secondary flavors come through such as sweet tobacco, cigar box, and dust. A great buy for a gran reserva!

Pale-rimmed ruby-red. Pungent aromas of dried cherry, spicecake and vanilla, with smoke and cigarbox overtones. Sweet, palate-coating cherry and cassis flavors are braced by gentle acidity and become spicier with air. Mocha and smoke note linger on a long, supple and gently tannic finish with very good energy.
